Holiday Music Review and Giveaway: Amy Grant "Tennessee Christmas"

I was given the opportunity to do a music review for Amy Grant's first Christmas album in 33 years, "Tennessee Christmas" and I am happy to share my review with you today.

For many fans of Amy Grant, me included, this is a long-awaited follow-up to her 1983 Christmas album titled "A Christmas Album". This recording is a new and intimate look at Amy Grant's family Christmas. All of the songs are personally special to her. She creates an personal feel for this album you will "see" as soon as you open the cd holder and see the sweet family Christmas pictures she chose to include with the album and you will "hear" as she shares some her favorite Christmas memories between the songs.

She is joined by her husband, Vince Gill for a fun version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside". She is also joined by their children, who she says are comprised of their blended family of her children, his children and their daughter, who all come together to make one family. When I hear her sing the adorable song, "Christmas Don't Be Late" with daughters Jenny, Corinna, and Sarah, I smile so brightly.

Amy says of her new Christmas album, “I’ve loved traveling the world with my guitar, but my favorite musical memories have happened right here at home around Christmastime with family and friends. I hope we’ve captured some of that magic to share with all of you this holiday season!”

This is a collection of thirteen new recordings, including the title track, "Tennessee Christmas".  I feel it combines a perfect blend of celebrating her beloved originals with Amy putting her own spin on some treasured Christmas standards. So many emotions of the season are invoked listening to these songs. Many of the desired and joyful emotions like love, peace, harmony, but as someone who lives with grief, I appreciate that she chose to include songs that include this undesired holiday emotion of grief, as we miss our loved ones during this season which brings to mind so many memories with them. Of all the holiday emotions invoked, I most appreciate having songs on my holiday playlist where I can remember my loved ones who have passed away and celebrate our precious holiday memories. This aspect of the recording adds to the "real and intimate" quality I feel when I listen to the songs.

The album was recorded in her home studio in Nashville and she collaborated with producers Mac McAnally (Jimmy Buffett, Martina McBride), Marshall Altman (Marc Broussard, Frankie Ballard) and Ed Cash (Chris Tomlin, David Crowder Band).

You can listen to one of the songs on the album, the beautiful "To Be Together" here:

  2. I love, love, love Christmas music and could listen to it year-round! I probably own around a hundred Christmas CDs. It's hard to pick just one favorite song, so I'll tell you two. "Mary Did You Know" touches my soul, and "Silent Night" grips my heart bringing me to tears. I'm a big fan of Amy Grant. I currently own her previous release "A Christmas Album" and would love to add "Tennessee Christmas" to my collection.

  3. I grew up listening to Bing Crosby and I love his I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas song! My mom loved to listen to him while we decorated for Christmas! I guess it is a tradition now to always listen to his CD!
